By the time my many students get to high school, they have convinced themselves that they hate reading. Sometimes this is because of their lack of success on state assessments that deplete their confidence. Sometimes it's because of years of being forced to read texts that are boring or unrelatable. I want to bring a love for reading back into their lives, something many haven't experienced since elementary school. Although we are required to read some books together as part of our state and district curriculum, they aren't often high interest for teenagers and can be outdated. I want my students to experience the enjoyment of reading a good book, and get the bonus of being able to learn through someone else's life experience. By adding this novel set to my classroom library, my students and I will be able to explore together, the story of a fellow modern teenager's and hold relevant discussions about culture, current events, and utterly remarkable circumstances.
