This class is all about being a working artist. Students create products to sell in an online store. They do all the research for the products and make all the products in house. We use a lot of recycled materials. Their products this year are candles and ceramic necklaces and keychains. They set up the website, do inventory, take orders, and ship items to customers.
Students in the class are planning an arts and crafts show in the spring. They are doing a call for vendors, contacting artists, and making plans for logistics of the show. They will also have a booth at the fair to sell their products.
Students are creating all aspects of running a business so many supplies are needed. Packaging is needed to ship products to those who purchase on the website, they want to make sure items don't break in shipping so bubble wrap is included and tissue paper makes it look professional. Students also want to include thank you cards as a way of making sure those that purchase know they are appreciated. Ink is needed to print inventory pages, labels, and marketing flyers they create. Students are creating a candle product line so candle making supplies like wax, wax coloring, scents, wicks, jars and labels are necessary. For their necklace and keychain line we use recycled clay from the ceramics class but glazes and watercolors are needed to decorate the pieces as well as necklace strings and clasps.
All monies raised through their fundraising efforts will go directly into the arts program at our high school. Students would like to purchase a pug mill and a new kiln for the ceramics room and eliminate fees for classes so more students take advantage of the art classes at their school.
