In my classroom, I stress the importance of collaboration. In small groups, students will read an argumentative article in protective sleeves. (RI.7.8) As we read, we will work in groups to determine the claim, supporting reasons, and evidence. Students will use the dry erase markers to annotate the text in a protective sleeve.
Additionally, we also work in groups at the beginning of the argumentative writing unit to practice writing strong claims and supporting reasons. (W.7.1) In small groups, they will write their claim and reasons on an easel pad. Afterward, students will walk around the room and leave comments (via post it notes) about can be improved and what was done well. This will help them revise their claims.
The ELA resource books will help me provide students with more relatable passages for students to sink their teeth into.
