My students spend the first 15 minutes of class every day immersing themselves in books of their choice. Often times, these kiddos come from backgrounds and home lives that make them feel trapped, and giving them time to read allows them an escape from their fears. As their teacher, I want to continue encouraging them to lose themselves in books that they enjoy and build that life skill of self-care through reading.
Because I'm a first-year teacher coming into a classroom with empty bookshelves, I don't have a library established that can meet the needs of my students just yet. I am hopeful that I'll gain the support from others passionate about getting books in the hands of our youth to inspire and motivate them to chase what they love. My students have been developing a deep love for reading with our daily practice of personal reading time. I want to encourage them to continue seeking out the stories that speak to them as they continue writing the story of their own lives.
