My students come from various backgrounds and many have experienced a great deal of trauma. Some of my students require intensive behavior supports, social skills instruction, and benefit from having someone to relate to. My students enjoy reading books that are relevant to their lives. We often read as a whole class or in a small group and many of my students also enjoy reading independently.
The various books selected for this project will help my students find books that are meaningful to them and which they can relate to.
It is important that my students do not feel alone and that they understand that there are others who have experienced similar struggles. Providing my students a choice on what to read, while being able to provide support and have discussions around these important topics is a key part of the community we have built in our classroom.
