These materials help make a difference in my students' learning by giving them tools and strategies to use when they have strong feelings that they are having difficulty articulating. Many times, sensory items and building toys help them get to a calm place giving their prefrontal cortex time to catch up with their amygdala. In other words, they will be able to calm down, eliminate the flight or fight response, and empower them to problem solve. Having materials for them to manipulate many times eliminates anxiety and stressors and allows children to be receptive to learning and growing.
