Creating visual diaries has become a staple project in my classroom when working through new novels. This project allows students to show their learning in creative and innovative ways, and provides me with an easy way to differentiate for my young scholars. In years past, these diaries have been made with printer paper, manila folders, and colored pencils. However, in recent times I have began splurging on supplies such as paint and oil pastels. The students feel they have much more stake in a project when using higher end materials, and feel as though I have more confidence in their abilities. This has produced more in-depth thinking about each page of their diary, and resulted in better grades and less missing work.
