Bringing literature written by underrepresented populations to replace the traditional canon serves to inspire and inform students who have not had the opportunity to see themselves in the pieces read in the classroom. Every student deserves to see great works that were written with their dreams and voice in mind. By providing this book for my classroom, I will be more effectively be able to reach students who feel left out or underrepresented in classrooms where they should have voice.
Students who can connect with a text or a text's origins perform better and show more engagement in the classroom. Ta-Nehisi Coates's "Between the World and Me" will be used as a classroom set to be explored in literary circles so that students can read and understand the words of Coates and voice their own amongst their peers in a safe environment.
