While my project directly impacts my students' autonomy when completing academic IEP goal-related work tasks in the classroom, it also directly allows my students to develop (Counseling: Category 1) Nevada Mindset Standards by enhancing self-confidence in the ability to succeed (Category 1; Objective 2), creating a sense of belonging in the school environment (Category 1; Objective 3), and enhancing a positive attitude toward work and learning (Category 1; objective 6).
My students have already demonstrated that they are engaged, willing learners. They may struggle with academic tasks in different ways than their same-aged peers, but they persevere. By allowing them even more autonomy, they are learning, from a young age, how to use time-management, organizational, and study skills, and how to apply self-motivation to learning (Counseling Category 2: Behavior Standards; Objectives 3 and 4).
By creating work tasks that can be individually housed in these storage units and labeled per student, each student can select learning tasks that correspond with his/her IEP goals and work toward fostering independence and increasing academic knowledge while simultaneously enhancing self-motivation and time-management skills.
