I need books (many of the ones I have chosen are YA or Graphic Novels) that will help my majority English as a Second Language students be inspired to read. The girls especially love YA fiction, while my English Learner boys love graphic novels, which help them better understand and put words into context by presenting them with pictures while still providing an appropriate reading level.
I need to have a classroom that inspires these kids to read without being told to do so. It needs to be fun, not a chore. The kids will be allowed to check out these books and read them at home as well. One of the most important things I can teach these children is how to communicate using proper grammar and Standard English to prepare them for the world after school. Many of my kids only encounter academic English while they are at school, so I want to maximize opportunities.
