Our breath is not guaranteed. Our school is in a predominately Black and Brown working class community in Brooklyn, NY and our students face environmental racism and some of the highest asthma rates in the country. Where breathing clean air is an act of protest, you can help us create calmer, healthier, more welcoming spaces come to be with the help of air-purifying plants. Our students want to transform our hallways and classrooms to reflect an environment of lush calm with the help of plant life. Help us to make our air cleaner, blood pressure lower, and our community of activist students breathe easy!
Our powerful scholars have identified the need for indoor plants in our space. Our students examined the significant research that proves plants in the classroom bring massive gains to stress reduction, memory, retention, blood pressure, and well-being for both students and teachers, and have concluded that our school would benefit enormously from more indoor greenery.
One room in particular has been identified as needing an urgent plant-make-over. While our in-school yoga classroom provides incredible trauma-informed outlets for social emotional learning and coping, relaxing movement, and good wiggly-fun, the space does not reflect the calm environment that students need and deserve. Any help would be so deeply appreciated!
