While at first glance these books appear to simply be a collection of the best new releases in middle-grade fiction, I also picked them for their potential to act as windows or mirrors. It is important to me that my students can see both themselves and their classmates in what they read. It is also important that they can connect with cultures, identities, and abilities beyond what they see immediately around them.
These books were selected specifically for their diverse cast of characters and themes, but also for their ability to connect with my students on multiple levels.
There are books based on different mythologies (Tristan Strong Keeps Punching, Pahua and the Soul Stealer), books involving children's lives abroad (Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna, Born Behind Bars), books with a diverse cast of characters (The Insiders, How to Find What You're Not Looking For, and really every other book). There really is a great range represented by these books.
Though my students may reach for them merely for the great stories, the glimpse they get in the mirror or through the glass will be invaluable.
