Children have "occupations" or daily activities that make up their everyday lives that include learning, playing, and socializing. A major component of a child's occupation is their role as a student. Occupational therapists use individualized intervention plans to facilitate the development of preparatory skills required in the school setting.
Occupational therapy recognizes that each student has a unique learning style and apply clinical expertise to make adaptations/modifications as needed to foster success in the classroom. Sensory regulation materials are used to address an underlying sensory component that is affecting learning and behavior. Fine motor gadgets that will engage students while simultaneously targeting motor skills and coordination involved with school-based activities such as hand-writing. All of these materials were chosen to improve student's participation in therapy sessions and thereby the classroom.
