RF.5.4 READING FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS:
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
I make new Accelerated Reader goals with my students every quarter. They need to make their individual point goal, reading level goal, and certification goal in order to participate in our incentive party.
I try to make my incentive parties educational, but fun. For example, we impale balloons to teach about polymers. Marbles and finger skateboards are used to teach about motion and forces. Our T-Shirt Art Party teaches students that permanent marker is soluble in isopropyl alcohol and because of this, designs on T-Shirts can be fun and educational. Hand boilers teach students that not all liquids boil at the same temperature.
I find that even reluctant readers will try to make their reading goals if there is an incentive to do so.
