COVID-19 forced our students to be flexible. They learned to attend classes via Google Meet, to adjust to hybrid and virtual classrooms, and to practice asynchronous learning. At the same time, our classrooms are learning to be more student-centered by practice. I want to utilize flexible seating to promote collaboration, increase student-centeredness, and practice rigorous group strategies. For example, one of our focuses this year is on discourse. Flexible seating will improve student discourse because it will allow them to collaborate more effectively and relax, which is important for them after a year of little group work or peer engagement. One of our lessons is a collaborative simulation on the Congress of Berlin. Students work in groups to simulate the scramble for Africa and then sit around the room in groups to discuss and debate outcomes. Flexible seating would allow for them to group together more organically and work in a more student-centered environment. This project is specifically targeted to meet NEVADA SEAD/SEL STANDARDS; It also allows for students to collaborate more flexibly on several Social Studies projects that address multiple standards, including SS.9-12.WH.34, SS.9-12.WH.33, SS.9-12.US.24, and many more.
