Because students have not interacted with each other, their discussion skills are lacking. Sometimes it's easier to participate knowing that you don't have to necessarily raise your hand or speak out. Writing out thoughts in advance help with being able to articulate their ideas.
Gamification sometimes helps students invest and engage. Being able to answer would you rather questions and formulate evidence is a segue to answering larger questions about the connection between ownership and sense of self. So the board games help with those social and critical thinking skills. Also students will connect and talk with their neighbors more often when it seems like the activity is low stakes (like a crossword), even though the "game" is working their vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
