Missoula Children’s Theater (MTC) is a worldwide organization that is recognized as the premiere group bringing performing arts opportunities to communities— most notably to kids—who might not otherwise have access to them. They believe in the importance of access, the power of creativity, and share our commitment to excellence. NVACS RF k-5, Craft and structure. MCT strives to transcend any barriers such as language, culture, financial resources, and unique needs to transform lives by actively engaging people in the arts. While virtually on our campus their team of touring artists, (aka Tour Actor/Directors), cast our students in a children’s musical which they perform after just six days of rehearsal. They will also teach three theatre workshops during the week, all students experience the theater. We would benefit from the MCT experience in the following ways: 1)our students (79%) come from another language background (Spanish, Mashallese, Tongan, Somoan, Tagalog, Guamanian). Best practices in English Language Development recommend providing students with creative and authentic activities during which they can interact with peers and adults in English. NVACS: SL. K-5, Comprehension and collaboration 2)Participation in MCT enhances a student’s socio-cultural and cognitive skills by providing opportunities to read and memorize songs, phrases, and character’s lines. Participate show increases in confidence and positive social-emotional well-being, life skills that can be applied in any academic setting or career. 3) The largely Hispanic parent population and other non-English speaking family members of students often feel intimidated to attend school events. However, MCT’s musicals featuring 60 local students have been proven to attract large numbers of parents/family members. They come to see their own students, friends of their students, and other Spanish-speaking families on zoom . 4) MCT shows are free family engagement opportunities.
