I use Science Olympiad events to help supplement our physical science curriculum. The students then use that knowledge to create their final models for the State Science Olympiad competition. The balsa wood, mini miter saw, cutting board, graph paper, and miter shear cutter are used for designing bridges and Wright Flyers. The drill and pocket hole jig are to build our Rube Goldberg machines and trebuchets. The rest of the materials such as the plastic wheels, spider wire and plastic propellers are for the mouse trap cars and home made instruments. Creating models and learning how to use tools that they are not normally exposed to in the classroom, gives students the self confidence to think outside the box and be more creative.
