Having to teach from home last school year due to the pandemic allowed me to learn how to utilize my old iPad for classroom use. Through the use of the GoodNotes app and my iPad, I was able to create digital class journals, write and send notes digitally, sign and submit all school related forms for district records, and annotate/grade my students' essays faster than I thought I ever could. I am seeking a replacement iPad as my old one no longer functions. At the start of our current school year I purchased an Apple TV and Apple pencil to allow me to mirror my iPad in my classroom. These past couple of months I have been able to write/model persuasive essays in class, annotate pdf literature, demonstrate how to properly support open ended responses with textual evidence, and allow students to use my iPad to practice and model their responses without having to feel the pressure of standing in front of every one at the board. Unfortunately, I have had to move back into using our older Document Camera technology, which has me sitting in one spot using paper and pencil trying to get a low pixel camera to focus properly.
Moving back to the streamlined digital ease of using an iPad would allow me to once again move about the classroom as we read, write, and engage with one another. My 10th grade students have seen first hand what the benefits of utilizing such great technology in the classroom can offer, and I hope to be able to continue that experience for them with a replacement iPad.
