Every day I encounter students who are dealing with crises, including trauma, grief, separation from loved ones, family stressors, and mental health challenges. All of this is in addition to the stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students cannot focus in class and be academically successful if they are mentally distracted. In order for students to achieve in school, they must learn how to adapt to life's challenges and utilize effective coping skills.
Students need a safe space on campus where they can de-escalate and return to class ready to learn. I aim to provide students with a positive environment where they know they can go if they are feeling overwhelming emotions. They need a trusted adult who can be a good listener but also teach them skills to address their challenges.
About my class
