Books change lives. I am challenging my students to read a variety of different kinds of books in order to learn more about themselves and others. They are challenged to read books about different ethnic groups, socioeconomic status groups, people with different gender identities, fantasy novels, books that make them laugh or feel good, books about people who are differently abled, books that teach them social emotional learning, etc.
It is important that students see themselves in books so that they know they are not alone and know what is possible. It is equally important that they learn about people who are different than them to instill empathy and tolerance.
