High-level peer-to-peer interaction is crucial for students' academic growth. The manipulatives, games, and dramatic storytelling items that are on the order are all resources that stimulate the mind to engage meaningfully. When students are involved in a game, a play, student/student activities they naturally rise to the learning objective. Speaking and listening are Common Core Standards because they promote connections between academics and life, and then learning becomes meaningful. A standard in 2nd grade is CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1, Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners. AKindergarten standard is CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.3, Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. For first-grade the standard is CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.1.A, Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions. All of these standards overlap with each other. Engaging in meaningful play allows for not only the growth of academic skills, but also of speaking and listening skills which are imperative for the progression of language skills, understanding, and critical thinking skills. As Mr. (Fred) Rogers said, "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning But for children, play IS serious learning Play is really the work of childhood." The Covid-19 pandemic took away the interaction, the play of students for a very long time. I see that my students have lost some of their ability to communicate and interact meaningfully. Through the play and interaction that these learning games will provide, the children will again be able to play and learn again!
