In my classroom, I have a very unique and special students. My special needs students are in different grade levels with varying strengths and weaknesses. With this diversity, I need to individualize instruction for students. This requires many materials, tools, and supports that constantly change and adapt to fit the needs of my learners. In a special education room, visual tools allow many learners to use the same resource. I make tools myself on the computer and print them out or use chart paper to display them in the room. We also require varying levels of books, hands-on materials, flexible seating, and differentiated activities (to name a few!). This classroom recognizes the amazing talents and abilities of these special learners that might not be recognized in other environments. We also focus on social-emotional learning and the ability to identify/recognize emotions in ourselves and others.
