This project and the bugs included always generate interest in the field of forensic entomology. The students meet the performance standard 7.3: Exploring Forensic Specialties (entomology) quite easily through this project, but they also are required to learn a little about lab safety and procedures (Performance Standard 4.1 and 4.2). We use the bugs to explore the need for professionalism and students are able to learn some valuable workplace skills through providing care for the critters.
The bugs provide an opportunity to care for another organism, which is especially great after the months alone due to COVID. Most students start by being somewhat apprehensive towards the beetles, however in a short time, many begin to care about and for the animals. We even are able to use them in our labs as participants and classroom examples as participants, they truly become a part of the class and curriculum.
