Our students spent a year and a half sitting behind computers for virtual learning. Some signed onto the Google Meets only to roll over and go to sleep. As a result of this troubling time, students are hard to motivate. Learning can't look like traditional stories, and assessments can't be one-size-fits-all. Your assistance with funding this project will allow students to think outside the box and demonstrate their learning in an array of performance options. I teach Jr. High ELA in a Title I school. These students are hard to get to read ANYTHING especially if it is tied to a traditional assessment. They are, however, excited about producing a TikToc, doing make-up, performing fierce poetry slams, short dramatic performances, tableaux, and singing Raps or even the Blues. With this project, students will still read and learn in the traditional sense, but I can stop over-testing and exit ticketing them to death. I want them to voice and choice in demonstrating their learning. The stage, lights, sound system & mics are to be used for alternative assessments (formative and summative) that will inspire their buy-in and participation from the beginning. While the actual performances will be on our stage at school, students will extend their school days by writing their scripts, songs, poems, etc at home as well as practicing them. I also have dreams of transforming my classroom into a Speak-Easy twice a year and inviting parents to come enjoy the show.
