I am a first year teacher in the classroom, and while I have been able to provide my students with reading material to help spark their love for reading (I am a firm believer in the quote "Everyone is a reader, some just have not found their favorite book yet"), the selection that I have this early in my career does not appeal to the broad spectrum of students that I have the priveledge of serving. As an English teacher, I have become accustomed to the the groans and complaints that come from reading, yet see their eyes and minds light up when they are exposed to reading material that appeals to them. I want to ensure that my classroom can be a place to browse an ample selection and find materials that will make my students lifelong readers and learners.
My text selections try to appeal to the interests of my students- those who are interested in graphic novels, those who are are members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those who do not yet know that they can see themselves in literature. It is my goal to provide students with a steady access to reading material that supports their growing personalities and intellects, and also helps them to better understand diverse and at times differing world views. My goal is to let students know that there is a place for them, and to inspire to create even more spaces for one another.
