Children who struggle with economic security are faced with chronic stress that makes it challenging to help them focus and stay involved at school. As a social worker at my school, the focus is on supporting kids who need clothes, food, shoes and basic needs but also wanting to give them a little joy and pleasure to support their learning. How often are some of these kids able to go to the store and have the guilty pleasure of buying a book to enjoy? I want to provide them with not only clothing support but also with the joys of reading in their home to have something to fulfill them and support their reading skills! Give a book while giving other needs may help make a child feel good and special as well as support learning!
