My students are diverse in race, religion, socio-economic status, and culture and some of them have never seen anyone who looks like them in a book. In these books, my students will not only see themselves represented, but the discussions we will have both as a whole class and in small groups will enrich the learning experience of all. During our weekly class meeting, we read a book together and then the students answer questions and have small group discussions about our current English topic. This weekly routine has provided opportunity for rich discussion and deep connections between students. Because we are a fully virtual school, every student has a Learning Coach nearby and classroom learning extends beyond the walls of our classroom into the homes of my students.
