Giving students a flexible seating area with areas to journal and problem solve in a space that is safe and supported by the school counselor will help my students to learn how to self regulate so that they can return to the classroom ready to learn.
We currently do not have a place that is conducive to meeting the diverse ways that students need to regulate themselves. We have students with severe ADHD, emotional issues, and special disabilities who would benefit greatly from having a specially designed area for self management.
The items I have selected support a variety of the Nevada Academic Content Standards; specifically ELA grades 6,7,8 Writing 2.a., Health Middle School Mental and Emotional Health 1.ME.MS.1, Health Middle School Nutrition and Physical Activity 1.NP.MS.2, and Health Middle School Interpersonal Communication 4.IC.MS.1. By supporting these standards, students can be more successful in attending to instruction, having fewer behavior issues, and improving in overall school performance.
