These materials will promote NVACS Grade 11/12 Reading Literature Standards 10 and 3. It's really important for students to be able to engage in reading that relates to their lives, and represents who they are as people. Many of my students have not ever read a book that they feel represents them as people. I teach predominately seniors this year, both Honors American Lit and English IV.
My Honors literature class is mapped around American authors, and while I think everyone can agree that there is a need for the classics to be taught, it's important for me, as an educator, to allow my students to be exposed to the diverse voices that make up American Literature, such as authors like Junot Diaz, a Latinx American Author. I also want my English IV students to be exposed to stories that are compelling and engaging, that discuss mental health, and themes that are very relevant to their lives, such as Ned Vizzini's It's Kind of a Funny Story.
