RL 6.7 Compare and contrast the experience of reading
a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing
an audio, video, or live version of the text,
including contrasting what they 鈥渟ee鈥 and 鈥渉ear鈥
when reading the text to what they perceive
when they listen or watch.
The majority of my special education students have severe reading deficits making it difficult understand grade level literature. When they are able to see and hear the literature it makes it easier and helps build comprehension skills. There are many great literature programs free and accessible to classrooms, such as PBS Kids.
Having a smart TV in the classroom will facilitate small group as well as whole group instruction using appropriate audio visual literature. Love for literature is encouraged by the student not having to work so hard to read and comprehend literature that is above the student's functional reading level.
Using this media will allow the classes to explore different and varied types of literature such as poetry, historical, fantasy, and current events. It will allow students the advantage of comprehension without the added stress of word attack skills that are far below grade level.
