These books will help my students be in control of their bodies and emotions. My students' emotional health is important to their foundation of learning. During distance learning and even now with in-person learning, student instruction needs to go beyond just academics. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a need for social-emotional learning. Many students were isolated for over a year and are having a hard time concentrating on learning and interacting with others. I plan on implementing lessons in the area of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship building. These materials give students an opportunity to discuss their worries, stress, anxiety, and relationships. The Worry Monster will invite students to write down their worries, so I can be informed about my student's mindset. All the books I have chosen have a main character who has to solve a problem and there is a message that students learn at the end. These two components are part of my reading standards, specifically RL2.2 and RL2.3. Students will be able to recount the details of the stories and also understand the lesson being told. The materials also help foster mental and emotional standards 1.ME.2.1 and 1.ME.2.2. For students to self manage this project includes flexible seating options and calming toys. I'm excited to increase my students' social-emotional health so they can learn and achieve!
