I teach Family and Consumer Sciences. My students learn about consumerism, health and wellness, nutrition, relationships, decision making, parenting, personality development, and so much more. One of my most popular classes is Custom Sewing. Sewing is a dying art that I truly love teaching. My students learn practical life skills like sewing buttons and mending seams, but they also learn how to construct clothes following basic patterns, and one of their favorite projects every year is making a quilt. They learn new skills, have fun, and take pride in what they make, often times going show their creations to other teachers and staff.
Our class lost ALL of our sewing supplies in Hurricane Ida. We are currently displaced, having school at another location. Our host school has been wonderful, but they don't have a comparable class. This means they don't have the supplies we need to learn these skills.
While I know we do have access to sewing machines, we do not have the other supplies needed to complete our projects. I love watching my students learn this art and doing my part to help keep it alive. Please consider funding my project to help my students get the equipment they need to continue learning these important skills, and keep sewing alive for them.
