These tools will help students learn effective, healthy coping skills to manage anxiety, stress, and discomfort. Some of these tools are difficult to come by outside of a therapeutic setting.
Healthy coping skills are essential to a happy life. Many of my students don't have access to coping tools at home, and our mental health providers are inundated with requests for sessions.
Some healthy coping skills I work to teach my students are coloring, drawing, mindfulness and meditation, using a fidget tool such as a spinner, reusable bubble wrap, or silly putty/slime, or listening to calming sounds and music. I also utilize healthy coping skills games with whole groups so that I can reach the largest number of students possible with the limited time we have in the school day without impeding instruction. An increasingly effective tool is building, such as with Legos or other building tools.
Any time a student can use their hands, their minds are free to work through their feelings in an effective and healthy way. Over the past year and a half especially, the coping tools I have in my office have gotten worn out, and replenishing them would seriously benefit my students in the long term.
