I teach English to students whose first language was something else. Their entire schedule is full of classes that use English for academics. They need to use the language while having fun. It makes it easier to learn.
For my students to play the board games and card games, we will have to use technical English to understand the rules and work on expressive language skills, colloquialisms, and listening skills. All of those things will happen while the students are laughing with each other and relaxed enough to develop their language skills without the obstacles of frustration or embarrassment.
