Neon reading is a fun engaging way to teach the main idea and summarize a story. Students simply highlight keywords and phases with different color highlighters. Once the highlighting is finished, the black lights come on and the lights go off. Then their answers glow. The students can visually see the main idea. Then they can use what they highlighted to write a summary of the story. These are both hard concepts for many students. This is an engaging way that students can learn these concepts. These lessons can easily be adapted to other subject areas such as math.
