Emotional regulation difficulties and patterns of emotional dysregulation (being stressed out and being in a state of sensory overload) disrupts the learning environment, leads to academic difficulties, and prevents students from academically performing at their personal best. Having a dedicated space outside of the classroom to help students regulate (inside the counseling office) will prevent dysregulated students from disrupting the entire class. Also, when students become dysregulated in the classroom, they often feel trapped, which my increase their sense of distress or lead to eloping from the classroom. The sensory items requested will allow our counseling team to create a safe and comforting environment for students to calm down, rebalance, and self-regulate. Also, it will provide students with a safe area to "escape" when the classroom becomes too stimulating or overwhelming for them. Moreover, the sensory items listed below are sensory pleasing, offer a sense of safety and comfort, help students to relax and self-regulate, focus, and calm down during high stress situations, times of dysregulation and crisis.
