My students struggle with early phonemic awareness and phonics. Although they range from second grade through fifth grade, most are reading at a Pre-K to Kindergarten level. They are in need of activities that will help them close the gaps to become readers, therefore fulfilling the Common Core Academic Standard ELA.2.3 (know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis in order to decode words). The Guided Reading Leveled Book Set, will help me work with my second and third grade students in a small group setting, allowing them to have material in their hands that they will be able to decode and understand, while boosting their confidence, since they are severely below grade level. Additionally, I will use the Comprehension Skills Practice Cards, to help my below grade level fourth and fifth graders' reading comprehension skills.
The pandemic has not only severely impacted their academics, but their feeling of comfort and safety in the classroom as well. They need an environment where they can feel open to learning, while practicing their early reading skills. The Calming Colors Bean bag set will add that calm touch to the classroom where they can relax as they are working on their literacy activities, including their Sight Word Sentence puzzles, Word-Work Folder Games, and Final E Instant Learning Centers, activities that are necessary to grow them as readers. These materials will also allow me to support my students on an individual basis, including the Touch Read Phonics Word Match, providing one on one support in the areas of phonics, sight word practice, and other skills necessary for reading. The Magic Board will also benefit them by allowing them to practice writing their words. I will use these resources along with focused reading instruction daily with my small groups.
