The materials will help make a difference in my students' writing abilities. They are too young to use paper without lines (college ruled) and we require them to add an illustration. Most journals at the local stores do not have space for an illustration. We place a big emphasis on writing in our district since we have so many students who are English Learners. The best way to get them to learn English is to write as a whole class every single day. They love their daily journal writing prompts but are unable to be successful with the college-ruled journals we were able to buy on our budget (they were 50 cents a piece at Wal-Mart).
We are a low-income district, which is why we have a great need for appropriate materials for our students. These will be used for one trimester, then sent home for continued practice. The pencil sharpener will be of great use to our classroom since we do not have one, and since the students are writing more, we could use a working sharpener.
