The student leaders at our school have identified the need to provide more activities during the day that create opportunities for inclusion of all students and bring opportunities to strengthen emotional wellbeing at our school. Many of the ways they plan to build this unity will require the use of a sound system and music.
I have requested a portable sound system, a popcorn machine, and an iPod Touch digital music player. These resources will be used at lunch, whole-school and club activities, and at extra curricular events. The students will increase inclusion when more students are able to hear what is going on.
We feel that the power of sound and music will unite our students and encourage them to participate in these activities. One activity they plan to use these resources for is to handout popcorn at lunch, play light-hearted, fun music and have a prize wheel. These student leaders want to bring a carnival-like feel to lunch to lighten the mood. They feel our students are faced with so many serious decisions and situations that giving them a chance to get a treat and spin the wheel will bring a little joy to their day.
Another way these materials will be used is by the HOPE squad. These students are identified as peers who other students can trust and go to when they are struggling. The HOPE squad is trained to handle these situations and lead other students to the resources they need to help their mental health.
The HOPE squad plans to use the speaker system to give inspirational speeches to their peers during advisory, at lunch and to groups of students during specific classes.
