My students engage in child initiated, center based learning during their school day. This allows the students to make a choice to engage in activities catered to their interests. During this time, I can embed language and social emotional learning opportunities into the preferred activities in order to meet their needs. This is the time of the day where I see my students' personalities shine, as well as the social emotional deficits brought about by the COVID pandemic. When given the materials to engage in imaginative play using the block center, dramatic play, and story telling, my students will have the opportunity to participate in the language rich and social emotional activities they so desperately need. These are the activities that have been lacking during distance education and throughout the COVID pandemic.
