My K-2 students are in the special education program and they are amazing learners, committed to academic success. Many of these students suffered greatly during at-home learning through COVID school closures. Also, their learning and developmental disabilities are often a hinderance to their learning and concentration. They are extremely fidgety and are constantly moving, which at times, distracts them from the lesson. This leads to many students kneeling or standing by the table rather than choosing to sit in their seats.
My goal is to use these wobble chairs and cushions as a way for students to be able to move while still following the lesson. The fidget toys will also be the perfect way for students to keep their hands busy, while their eyes and attention are on me.
In addition, these students struggle with change and quick transitions, so the hourglass timers will allow a visual representation of their impending transition. The various other manipulatives will help me create hands-on lessons for the kinesthetic and tactile learners.
Overall, I want to give my students the greatest chance for success. I think the flexible seating, fidget toys, and manipulatives are the best way to meet the students where they are, to continue fostering their academic development.
