This project will help us grow bacteria from common surfaces, which goes with our life science standards in 3rd grade. The two-fold purpose is to show the beginnings of life and how things nurture and grow. Secondly to bring awareness to the students of the bacteria around us, and the importance of hygiene and sanitizing our hands.
The digital microscope will show how the bacteria grows, and we'll use slides to time-lapse the growth. All the dishes will be sealed with tape and disposed of when finished. No bacteria will be exposed to the students. The students will use the scientific method to hypothesize what areas will have the most bacterial growth, and write about their functions.
We will use science, math, and writing skills to bolster the experiment. We will then ask the students to present our findings through a short presentation for parents, video uplinks, and any other classrooms that would like to learn from our findings.
