Our middle school has a very large diverse student population, and many of their families are still trying to manage the aftermath of Hurricane Ida while they are continuing to live in one of the hardest hit areas in the US of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to our many of students' families experiencing damage to their homes, our school took substantial damage. While we were lucky enough to be able to repair our facilities, most of our equipment was badly damaged, lost, or destroyed. This project is seeking to restore a sense of normalcy to these young students' lives by resupplying equipment that was lost when our building was damaged.
Some of our classes for Health and Physical Education have over 50 students per grade at a given time, so lots of equipment is needed for adequate use in class. Specifically, the equipment donated through this project will be used by children in grades 6 through 8 in their Health and Physical Education classes. When we returned to the school after a month of being shut down, we discovered that we were left with only 1 equipment bag of balls left from the clean up during the closure. The bag consisted of 5 footballs, 2 soccer balls, and 3 basketballs. With out class sizes, it is impossible to hold a productive class with so little equipment.
