I am asking for 4 sets of noise cancelling headphones, which will be distributed in our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classroom. Each teacher will use these as apart of their "calming corner" to help students learn self-regulation skills and advocate for their own mental health needs.
Students who may have sensory needs, struggle with anxiety, ADHD, or generally just enjoy a more calm learning environment really can benefit from a simple quiet space to learn.
The literature and guidelines emphasize the academic benefits of wearing NC headphones (decreased auditory distraction, increased concentration, learning improvement, and decreased distress). These benefits are particularly expected for students with special needs. Asking students families to provide noise cancelling headphones creates an undue burden on low income students and fmailies, and would create an inequitable classroom experience.
