Every student enters the mathematics classroom with a vast variety of skills. After a year or more in distance learning the diversity in learning and learning loss has presented difficult challenges. Teaching math in the middle school was already a tough task but with the differing ability levels it has made the task even harder. Students are afraid to talk about their mathematical thinking during a "Normal" school year. This year it is even harder. Students lack confidence. This project will help allow my students to enter mathematical discussion at a more common level and ability. Students will be allowed the opportunity to check work, look at their mathematical thinking and then either rework problems, seek help more quickly and be more willing to participate in a class discussion because they have the confidence they need. The calculators will help meet the needs and learning styles of each student where they are, and allow them to feel confident in giving everything their "best try!"
These new tools with help support the Mathematical standards and Mathemtical practice standards I teach. By encouraging my students to be risk takers in their own thinking I can develop and foster their own confidence and in turn engage them in richer discussions and problems that require deeper understandings. When students are stuck on the basic algorithms it is difficult to take their understandings to deeper levels. My goal is to have students who love to learn. These materials will help assist me and my learners in mathematics. I want to reach all students and with the extreme mathematical deficits after Covid this task has been very difficult.
