Studies have shown that students perform better when they have been physically active and given brain breaks throughout the day. Our middle school students do not receive their physical education or dance classes until the last hour of the school day. They stay seated in their classroom chairs all day, with the exception of their recess/lunch time at 10:20 am.
During their recess/lunch time, the students usually sit by themselves, sit with a couple of their friends, or are glued to their school laptops playing games and watching their TV shows. Students are not used to socializing face to face. They are not used to having only having one break throughout the school day. During Covid-19, students could get up and get a snack or use the bathroom without needing permission. They did not need to ask or talk to anyone.
My project is to give all of our students many unique opportunities to be active, socialize, and make new friends. Our kids need to be kids again. Supplying outdoor games like cornhole, bolo, frisbee golf, Connect 4, Jenga, and ring toss will allow our students to open up to others, smile, laugh, problem solve, and just have fun. Netflix and sitting alone should not be our norm. Our kids need to feel like kids again. Let's give them some fun!
