COVID-19 school closures, among other detriments, were very isolating for students, particularly young adolescent, middle school students. My project aims to bring students together through the use of art and kitchen creations in an after-school club. My Artistry and Food students will be introduced to the basics of food and nutrition and the beauty of food. They will be inspired to create artistic drawings/visual displays of food, design menus, and table settings, and then cooperatively make those creations in our kitchen lab, baking and cooking their food for members of the community to enjoy in a schoolwide open house (think appetizers and cookies). The goal is to have the students experience food and art in a tactile way while enjoying the company of others and, ultimately, the community. They will use the construction paper and markers to create visual displays and the kitchen items (cookie sheets, cooling racks, food items) to make their food creations to share with others. Everything that is requested will be used to enhance the project.
This Artistry and Food project will foster bonds between students and community members that were disrupted due to the traumatic experience of COVID-19. Too, the project reinforces the importance of cooking and nutrition.
