Special education students receive testing (math comprehension and fluency, reading comprehension and fluency, writing fluency and expression, spelling, and letter word recognition) every three years in order to determine qualification for special education services. Through this test, special education teachers are able to utilize the Content Standards to create an individualized road map for each student's academic career.
Standards include focuses in the following content areas: Math (A.CED.A - Create equations that describe numbers or relationships), Reading (6-12.R.1 - (Reading - English - Key Ideas and Details) – Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text), and Writing (6-12.W.4 - (Writing - English - Production and Distribution of Writing) - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience). These standards help generate individualized benchmarks which are designed to facilitate academic growth specific to each student so grade level expectations can be met.
COVID impacted my students' abilities to receive the specially designed instruction and standard based curriculum required and outlined in their IEP's. The KTEA-3 test will help determine if changes need to be made to their education plans because of this set back.
