These calm down kit materials will help my upper grade students process through the big feelings they are carrying around all day long on their shoulders. These students carry the trauma of difficult living situations, lack of stability, low self esteem, on top of the trauma of COVID. My heart breaks for the burden they are carrying.
My philosophy is that when students feel loved, they are able to learn. I want to create a comfortable spot for my students to go to when they are feeling overwhelmed or anxious. I am working with my students to listen to their physical cues to understand when they are anxious, and then to choose a calming activity to lower their anxiety. These materials will help achieve our goal of creating a supportive classroom community where my students feel safe, especially when they might not feel safe anywhere else. I want my fifth graders to enter middle school next year confident and hopefully, be the leaders I know they can be!
